Introduction: Side Effects Of Sanitary Pads

Every month, millions of women worldwide rely on sanitary napkins as a fundamental part of their menstrual hygiene routine. These discreet, easily accessible, and affordable products have significantly improved women's lives, providing comfort and convenience during menstruation. However, as with any product, there may be potential side effects that require our attention and understanding.

In this comprehensive article, we will delve into the world of sanitary napkins to explore their potential side effects, backed by scientific data, expert opinions, and reputable sources. We aim to equip readers with a well-informed understanding of these products, helping them make empowered choices about their menstrual health.

The Evolution of Sanitary Napkins: A Brief Overview

Before delving into the sanitary pads side effects topic, let's take a moment to understand the history and development of sanitary napkins. From ancient times when women used various materials such as papyrus and wool, to the modern-day disposable pads, the evolution has been significant, driven by the pursuit of comfort, absorbency, and convenience.

The Composition of Sanitary Napkins: Unraveling the Ingredients

To comprehend the potential sanitary pads side effects, we must first examine their composition. Most disposable sanitary pads include layers of cellulose, superabsorbent polymers, adhesives, and synthetic fragrances. These components are meant to provide excellent absorption and odor control. However, certain chemicals used in these products have raised concerns about their impact on women's health.

Investigating the Sanitary Pads Side Effects

In this section, we will meticulously explore the potential sanitary pads side effects, considering both anecdotal evidence and scientific studies.

A. Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions

Some women have reported experiencing skin irritation or allergic reactions when using certain brands of sanitary napkins. This reaction may be attributed to the chemicals used in the product or the synthetic materials in contact with the skin for an extended period.

B. Vaginal Infections is another sanitary pads side effects

Maintaining proper vaginal hygiene during menstruation is crucial. Improper use of sanitary napkins, especially leaving them on for too long, can create a favorable environment for bacterial growth and infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections.

C. Menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Though extremely rare, TSS is a life-threatening condition associated with prolonged use of super-absorbent tampons. While sanitary napkins have a lower risk of causing TSS, it's essential to be aware of the symptoms and take necessary precautions.

Actually, Diabetes, endometriosis, and infertility are some adverse outcomes of exposure. Sanitary pads are distinguished for being leak-proof since they contain a plastic covering at the bottom that keeps liquid or air from flowing through. It is well knowledge that plastic absorbs heat and moisture, which helps yeast and germs develop.

D. Chemical Exposure

Some disposable sanitary napkins contain chemicals such as dioxins, furans, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are produced during the bleaching process. These substances are known to be harmful, and even though their concentrations in the pads are low, their long-term effects are a topic of concern.

According to a study in which the researcher used on the basis of PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses), a systematic review methodology was devised.

The three basic components of pads are an impermeable back sheet, an absorbent core made of cellulosic patch, and a fluid permeable top sheet. The calming top sheet is constructed of a non-woven polyethylene/polypropylene material. The back sheet is a polyethylene film with an adhesive, while the core is a polyacrylate polymer foam. In scented pads, fragrance is injected between the core and the back sheet.

This mixture also contains phthalates, dioxins, chemicals that are similar to dioxins, furans, chloroform, acetone, styrene, chloromethane, chloroethane, and methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN), all of which are known carcinogens.

These VOCs have been the focus of safety research because of how easily their toxicity impairs the ability of the body to reproduce by interfering with a properly functioning feedback system, a perfect timing and balance, and optimal communication between cells and organs. The need for investigations on the VOCs is further supported by the fact that a seemingly slight disruption in the reproductive system brought on by their toxicity can significantly alter reproductive problems and subsequent pregnancy outcomes [11].

A preliminary investigation by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2017 revealed that 10 of the most dangerous VOCs were present in 666 sanitary napkins/pantyliners and 10 diaper products sold in South Korea since 2014.

Further more,The list of VOCs found in feminine hygiene products was made public by the French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health and Safety.

This contains di-n-octyl phthalate, insecticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and butylphenyl methylpropional. The broad phrase "polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon" refers to Chrysene, cyclopentapyrene, benzofluoranthene, benzofluoranthene, benzoperylene, indenopyrene, and dibenzoanthracene are some examples of benzopyrene-related chemicals.

The study classified glyphosate and its metabolites as pesticides, along with lindane, hexachlorobenzene, quintozene, and aminomethylphosphonic acid.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives: Menstrual Cups and Cloth Pads

To address the environmental impact of disposable pads and potential side effects, eco-conscious women have turned to alternatives such as menstrual cups and cloth pads. These options not only reduce waste but also minimize exposure to certain chemicals present in conventional sanitary napkins.
